Winnipeg Parks Rose

Planted July 31, 2025
in the backyard by the back fence.

I think the rose bush
at the other of the flower bed is also a
Winnipeg Parks Rose.

Winnipeg Parks Rose will grow to be about 3 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 3 feet.
This shrub should only be grown in full sunlight.

This rose is highly ornamental and will turn red in the fall. The fruits are showy red hips displayed from mid to late fall. I often deadhead the roses but will leave them from this point forward in order to benefit from the rosehips.
This bush has cherry red flowers, dark red-tipped foliage, red hips, is excellent for cutting and is
a tough, long-blooming, fragrant rose.

Yukon Sun Rose

Planted in a garden space in Norglenwold  with a good southwest exposure.
Planted summer 2024.
Yukon Sun is a shrub garden rose, growing up to 75 cm in height by close to a metre in width with a semi-upright growth habit.  The vibrant yellow semi-double flowers (7.6 cm) bloom continuously throughout the entire growing season.  Plants are highly resistant to black spot disease.  They are cold hardy to -35C when most of the top shoot dies but regrows well again in the spring.
As in all other rose varieties, Yukon Sun does not like waterlogged soil but
requires watering during dry spells to have good blooms.  It self-cleans,
meaning the spent flowers shed petals, keeping the plants tidy with fresh
growth and new flowers.  Plants are resistant to blackspot disease and do not
need to be covered during the winter.  Prune this rose in the early spring or
fall to give the bushes the desired shape.

Beach Rose

Beach roses are found around many of the beaches in  Rhode Island.  Also known as Sea Rose or Salt-spray Rose they grow well in the Coastal Sand Dunes.  Rose hips resemble small crab apples and although they have a slightly bitter taste they are edible.

Winnipeg Parks Rose

This rose bush was been planted at the beginning of June 2019 in a Northwest facing bed at the Lakehouse in Norglenwood on Sylvan Lake, but due to the openess of the yard should
receive ample sun.

The Winnipeg Parks Rose bush belongs to the Parkland Artist Series (1990) and was introduced by the Morden Research Station in Manitoba. It is of average size, growing to a height of 24" to 36"  and a width of about 24" to 36".
Dark green disease resistant foliage turns red tinged in the fall.  Brilliant medium red fragrant flower clusters throughout the summer until the first frost.
One of the most popular shrub roses.
Zone 2 cold tolerance.

Water regularly as needed. Feed in spring with an all purpose fertilizer prior to new spring growth.  Can prune back heavily in spring to promote vigorous new growth and better flower production.  If a severe winter causes die back prune back and can restart as low as root system.

Full sun.

I moved this rose, not sure when exactly, but think it's the rose by the back fence now.  It has done very well and has all the characteristics of the Winnipeg Parks Rose.  Although it could be the rose in the front garden-to be determined.
Here is a photos of the rose  July 31 2025.

Emily Carr Rose

This is my second Emily Carr Rose bush.  The first one was planted in our home in Red Deer and thrived in a sunny bed.  This new bush has been planted in a Northwest facing bed at the Lakehouse in Norglenwod on Sylvan Lake, but due to the openess of the yard should
receive ample sun.
The Emily Carr Rose bush belongs to the Canadian Artist Series and is a compact plant growing to a height of 1.1 to 1.5 meters. and a width of about 1 meter.
Planted July 17, 2017

Grandma Bolton's Rose Bush

This rose bush holds special meaning to a Calgary family.  Grandma Bolton's rose bush was moved from Grandma Bolton's farm to a starter home first in SE Calgary, then to the family's second home in the same neighborhood and now recently moved with the family of five to their new home in Mount Royal.  It is holding it's own and appears to have handled nicely the transition to it's new location once again.  It should be blooming soon.

Wild Rose

Wild rose bushes are abundant in the wild areas surrounding the cabin at Sylvan Lake.  The pictures below were taken in late June this year (2014) and indicate that the blossoms have been out for a while and are almost done.  This shrub, which can grow up to 15 metres tall, is renowned for it's prickly stems, beautiful  pink flowers and nutritious rosehips.  The wild rose is Alberta's provincial flower.
Hot tea made from wild rose petals and leaves or a cold "julep" made from soaking fresh petals with an equal amount of cool water then lemon juice and honey are wonderful drinks that many also enjoy.

The bright red rosehips have an applelike flavour and are very high in vitamin C.  Rosehips are best picked immediately after the first frost and can be make into jams, syrups and jellies. Hot tea made from wild rose petals and leaves or a cold "julep" made from soaking fresh petals with an equal amount of cool water then lemon juice and honey are wonderful drinks that many also enjoy.
