Fruit Trees in Waimea

These trees grow in the backyard at the home of friends in the village of Waimea (also known as Kamuela), Kaua'i County, on the Island of Hawaii, USA. This garden is on the dry side of  Waimea.

We picked fruit from the papaya every morning for breakfast and often picked one for salads for lunch or supper.  The papaya is a large tree-like plant growing from a single stem from 5 to 10 metres tall.  The leaves are similar in shape to the plumeria but much smaller and wax-like.  The fruit is ripe when it is soft and has an amber to orange colour.
The pictures of this orange tree were taken in March.  The crop was plentiful and provided us with yummy oranges to take to the beach for snacks.

This banana plant had 3 large clusters of bananas when we visited in early March.
